Since the drought of the 1990s, West Basin has been implementing aggressive water conservation programs to help residents and businesses use water more effectively. Our programs have emphasized such tools as education, rebate incentives, and plumbing retrofit hardware. These programs, together with passive conservation measures such as updated plumbing and building codes, have directly resulted in significant reductions in retail water use within
West Basin’s service area. By current estimates, demand management conservation saves more than 4.5 billion gallons of imported water every year. This is equivalent to the amount of water used by almost 30,000 households in Southern California.
Our conservation programs include a variety of cost-effective measures that contribute to conserving water, improving water quality, reducing imported water needs and increasing the region’s water supply reliability.
“More than 50% of household water use is outdoors.”
“A 10-minute shower uses about 55 gallons of water.”
West Basin adopted its Water Conservation Master Plan in December 2006 focused on guiding regional investments and translating conservation goals into tangible initiatives for residents, businesses and various levels of government. This Plan has been created to adapt to changing technologies and environmental conditions, while at the same time offering substantive recommendations within home environments and business communities. In addition, a shorter version of the Plan was created to highlight key elements.
