Groundwater Recovery – Brackish Groundwater
C. Marvin Brewer Desalter
Although the seawater barriers at both the West Coast Basin Barrier and the Dominguez Gap create hydrologic “walls” to prevent additional seawater from intruding into the Basin it does little to mitigate the seawater already within the area from past years’ overproduction. This “brackish” groundwater, resulting from seawater intrusion, needs to be removed in order to efficiently utilize the groundwater basin. Therefore, under the partnership with local purveyors, West Basin constructed the C. Marvin Brewer Desalter Treatment Facility. This facility, located adjacent to the City of Torrance bus maintenance and storage yard, treats and purifies groundwater for potable delivery. Through a reverse osmosis treatment system, the Brewer Desalter produces 5 million gallon per day of high quality water to consumers in the California Water Service Company retail service area.
